Shikoku Mura: Shodoshima Farmer’s Kabuki Theater
Venue Features
An open-air museum located at the foot of Yashima in Setonaikai National Park, known for its scenic beauty. Covering approximately 50,000㎡, the area features traditional homes and buildings from the Edo to Taishō periods. Visitors can experience Japan's traditional culture, customs, and way of life while walking among the cherry blossoms, autumn leaves, and other seasonal scenery. The Shikoku Mura Gallery—designed by Tadao Ando and located within the village—in addition to offering art displays, also has a beautiful water garden with views of the Sanuki Plain.
A rural kabuki stage from the late Edo period, relocated from Shodoshima, combines the view of an audience seating——reminiscent of the Roman Colosseum, with a large thatched roof to create something unique. The open-air theater offers a distinct atmosphere where you can hear birdsong, insect sounds, and even the nearby train crossing signal. In addition to opera and musical events, seasonal decorations like hina dolls and samurai dolls are displayed on the stage, providing visitors with a traditional atmosphere.
