Exploring the Appeal of New Year’s Countdown Events Around the World

Last Update | 2026.01.26 TREND

Hello! This is Ishida from GP. How do you usually welcome the New Year each year?

When we look at New Year’s celebrations around the globe, it becomes clear that their appeal lies not merely in extravagance, but in the way they deliver experiences that can exist only in that place and at that moment. In this article, we introduce five uniquely memorable countdown events from around the world. Enjoy the journey—and imagine yourself traveling across continents as the clock strikes midnight.

United States: A Festival Where Time “Falls”

NYC Times Square “Ball Drop”

We begin with one of the world’s most famous New Year’s traditions: the Times Square Ball Drop in New York City.

Perched atop One Times Square, a massive crystal ball slowly descends over the final 60 seconds before midnight. This simple yet iconic gesture captivates viewers across the globe. As confetti rains down on the crowd, hundreds of millions of people share the same instant through television broadcasts and live streams—a truly worldwide New Year’s experience.

At its core, this production transforms the abstract notion of “time passing” into something tangible through the physical movement of a monumental object.

The origin of this idea can be traced back to 19th-century Britain, at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, where time balls were once dropped to help nearby ship captains set their chronometers accurately. Times Square elevated this practical mechanism into pure entertainment.

First held in 1907, the event has continued for more than a century. While its central experience—the descending ball—has never changed, its materials and design are constantly updated for each era. It is certainly a moment many dream of witnessing in person at least once in their lives.

Scotland: A Collective Ritual of Purification by Fire

Hogmanay (Torchlight Procession from 0:18)

Next is Scotland’s legendary New Year celebration, Hogmanay. Running from New Year’s Eve through the early hours of January 1, Edinburgh’s festivities famously stretch across three days, with stages set up throughout the city hosting live music from a wide range of genres.

The highlight is the Torchlight Procession held at year’s end, when thousands of participants march through the capital’s Old Town toward its historic castle, carrying blazing torches.

Since ancient times, fire has been believed to possess the power to burn away impurity. The procession symbolizes cleansing away misfortune and negative energy from the old year, allowing people to enter the new one refreshed and renewed. This is not merely a parade, but a ritual imbued with a powerful message of purification.

The sight of flames weaving through Edinburgh’s cobblestone streets creates a scene so immersive it feels like stepping back into medieval Europe—an atmosphere rooted deeply in local culture and impossible to replicate elsewhere.

Dubai: A Dynamic Spectacle Staged on the World’s Tallest Building

Burj Khalifa

Our next destination is Dubai, where the countdown unfolds against the backdrop of the world’s tallest skyscraper: the Burj Khalifa.

What distinguishes Dubai’s celebration is its overwhelming scale—far beyond fireworks alone. LED imagery and laser effects are fused into a breathtaking multimedia display. The entire 828-meter tower becomes a colossal screen, perfectly synchronized with music and light.

Countdown numbers, geometric patterns, and celebratory messages flash across the structure, while fireworks illuminate the night sky in a dramatic urban spectacle. By transforming the city itself into a stage, the event leaves a powerful impression of Dubai’s futuristic vision.

Even through video, the intensity is unmistakable. Experiencing it live is surely on many travelers’ wish lists.

Spain: Testing Your Luck with Twelve Grapes

Las doce uvas de la suerte

Spain offers a very different approach to welcoming the New Year through the charming custom known as Las doce uvas de la suerte—the twelve grapes of luck.

At midnight on New Year’s Eve, people eat one grape for each of the twelve chimes of the clock. Finish all twelve in time, and the coming year is said to bring good fortune.

Rather than shouting over a countdown, crowds fall silent, focusing intently on the bell and popping grapes into their mouths one by one.

What makes this ritual so fascinating is its simplicity.

There are no massive structures or flashy effects—just the sound of bells and twelve grapes that fit in the palm of your hand.

People scramble to keep pace with the rhythm, laughing, coughing, and sometimes failing altogether, yet sharing that fleeting moment together. This blend of tradition and playfulness beautifully reflects Spain’s cultural richness.

The Philippines: Driving Away Misfortune with Thunderous Sound

Philippines (Countdown Moment from 7:40)

Our final stop is the Philippines, where New Year’s Eve is defined by sheer volume.

As midnight arrives, fireworks and firecrackers erupt alongside blaring car horns, banging pots and pans, and booming music, plunging entire neighborhoods into a wall of sound. Unlike many countries, these fireworks are not confined to large venues—residential streets light up as well, with sparks bursting across the sky in every direction.

This deafening celebration is believed to drive away evil spirits and bad luck through noise.

Rather than a tightly choreographed show, everyone becomes an active participant, creating the chaos themselves. That very disorder is what gives the Philippine New Year its distinctive character.
