Toei Kyoto Studio Park — long known as a filming location for movies and TV dramas — has officially reopened this spring with a major renewal! What was once a place to simply “observe period drama sets” has evolved into an immersive theme park where visitors can step directly into the story itself.

The new concept is an “immersive experience park for adults.” Stories unfold throughout the entire park, and visitors themselves become part of the narrative. In addition, new nighttime content designed specifically for adults offers a completely different atmosphere after dark, making it possible to enjoy two entirely different experiences in one day.

Today, we’ll introduce some of the highlights of the newly reborn Toei Kyoto Studio Park!

Toei Kyoto Studio Park Has Been Renewed — Here’s What Makes It Special

The biggest change in this renewal is the shift from simply “watching” to fully “immersing.” The entire park now functions as one giant stage, allowing visitors to walk through and experience stories unfolding around them in real time.

In addition, the park has expanded its nighttime adult-oriented programs and hands-on Japanese cultural experiences, creating even more ways for visitors to enjoy the space than ever before.

Let’s Take a Closer Look at the Main Attractions

“360° Real-Time Drama”

One of the biggest highlights of the renewal is the “360° Real-Time Drama” experience, which transforms the entire park into a living stage. Throughout the grounds, ninjas, samurai, and townspeople each play their own roles while the story progresses naturally over time.

For example:

  • Events surrounding a bridal procession
  • Movements of the Shinsengumi
  • Encounters involving wandering ronin

……all unfold simultaneously throughout the park.

Visitors are free to walk around and follow whichever scenes capture their interest. Eventually, these seemingly separate storylines intertwine and build toward a dramatic climax, creating a truly immersive narrative experience.

Nighttime Events (Adults Only)

At night, the park also offers special R-18 immersive experiences exclusively for adults.

Cho-Han Gambling Experience (R-18)

The moment you step inside, you’re transported to an Edo-era gambling hall. Every night, lively games of Cho-Han take place as dealers shake dice cups while shouting energetic calls to the crowd.

Visitors themselves become part of the excitement. Instead of betting money, participants wager their own “wishes” and choose between odd or even. It’s an interactive experience that allows guests to feel the thrill of traditional Edo gambling in a way that can likely only be experienced here.

The Torture Mansion for Adults Only (R-18)

A terrifying interrogation room awaits.

Only open at night, this special adults-only attraction places visitors inside a dramatic Edo-period mystery. Guests are accused of involvement in an incident and led into a terrifying torture mansion.

Inside, numerous historical torture devices recreated by the studio’s art staff are displayed throughout the building. Through this theatrical experience, visitors can gain insight into the justice system and interrogation methods of the Edo period.

Don’t worry though — it’s completely safe and painless.

Action & Interactive Attractions

The park also offers plenty of action-focused attractions for visitors who want a more physical and energetic experience.

Ninja Show “NINJAMISSION”

Enjoy a world-class ninja show in a non-verbal format.

The park’s famous ninja performance has been updated into a non-verbal production that can be enjoyed regardless of language. Featuring acrobatic stunts, ninja action, and immersive effects, the show combines lighting, sound, and visual technology to create an exciting cinematic atmosphere.

Samurai Training Hall

Hidden within Edo-period Kyoto lies a training ground for samurai warriors. Once you step inside, you become a samurai trainee yourself.

Learn sword stances, traditional movements, and the mindset of a samurai. By the end of the experience, you may just feel like a fully-fledged warrior.

Ukiyo-no-Miyako Play Experience

Learn traditional Kyoto culture through immersive play.

Set inside a traditional townhouse decorated with ukiyo-e art, this experience combines two immersive attractions:

  • “Ukiyo-e World,” where visitors step directly into the world of ukiyo-e paintings
  • “Kyoto Play,” where guests interact with actors while learning Kyoto-style movements and Edo-period expressions

Together, these experiences offer a playful and engaging way to explore traditional Kyoto culture.

“100 Years of Uzumasa Period Dramas” Exhibition

Uzumasa has long been known as the home of Japanese historical filmmaking. This exhibition celebrates 100 years of period dramas through authentic materials, immersive displays, and behind-the-scenes experiences.

Visitors can also watch interviews with actors and directors, as well as experience simulated filming environments that reveal the production process behind classic Japanese cinema.

Be sure to stop by the fortune-telling house visited by townspeople seeking guidance in life.

From romance fortunes to financial luck — and even humorous Kyoto dialect fortunes — visitors can listen closely to the voices of fate and perhaps discover something new about themselves along the way.

Traditional Japanese Culture Experiences

Don’t miss the chance to experience traditional Japanese culture firsthand.

This renewal also greatly expands opportunities to experience Japanese cultural traditions.

Visitors can participate in tea ceremony experiences while learning the spirit of Japanese hospitality, or try flower arrangement workshops that introduce Japan’s unique sense of beauty and aesthetics.

The park also offers opportunities to experience traditional performing arts such as Noh theater, known for its slow, refined movements and atmospheric sound, as well as Kyogen, a more h

umorous and approachable form of classical theater centered around dialogue and comedy.

Rather than simply observing Japanese culture, visitors can actively experience it themselves — something that feels fresh and exciting not only for international guests, but for Japanese visitors as well.

Wearing Traditional Clothing Makes the Experience Even More Immersive

If you’re going to walk through Edo-period streets, why not fully embrace the atmosphere in traditional clothing?

At Toei Kyoto Studio Park, visitors can rent kimono and period costumes and freely explore the park while dressed in them. Blending naturally into the scenery and characters around you, simply walking through the town begins to feel like stepping back in time.

For those who want to dive even deeper into the immersive experience, this is highly recommended.

Closing

Before you realize it, you begin to feel like part of the world itself. That may be the greatest appeal of this renewal.

Depending on where you walk and how you spend your time, the scenery you encounter — and even the story you experience — can completely change. That’s what makes it possible to have a totally different experience, even within the same day.

Whether you enjoy the lively atmosphere of daytime or the quieter, more mysterious ambiance at night, both offer something unique to this newly transformed space.

Why not discover your own story inside the reborn Toei Kyoto Studio Park?

If this sounds even a little interesting to you, be sure to check it out for yourself. See you next time.
